Fishbone Diagrams

Every problem has a cause—and a solution. At Blue Cottage, we use fishbone diagrams, also known as Ishikawa or cause-and-effect diagrams, to identify the root cause of a problem, which provides insight into process behavior. We typically group causes of current problems into major categories to identify these sources of variation, such as people, processes, machines, materials, and environment. Looking at the causes of problems can reveal the variables and relationships at play, and identify solutions to problems that can be used to create a vision for a more efficient, productive future state.
